Q: What's an ARN?
A: The ARN stands for Account Reference Number. Your ARN is available either from your billing e-mail that I-manila sends during every billing cycle, or your I-manila sign-up form. Access to the member services requires the ARN to ensure that only the valid primary account has the authority to create and delete their supplementaries.

Q: How do I change my password?
A: You can change your password, just go to our website at www.i-manila.com.ph, then click on My I-Manila Account.

Q: My modem is a 56k, why am I connected at a slower speed?
A: Make sure that your modem supports V.90. Be aware also that in quite few places you won't be able to get a 56k connection speed because of the following: 1. The conditions of your phone lines. Modem speeds (56k, 33 and others) are the ideal speeds but we have to take into consideration that these connections go through the phone lines and other things, such as noise of the phone line.

Q: There are common suffixes to domain names / URL's like com, org, and net. What do they mean?
A: com - commercial, org - organization, net - network, gov - government. Aside from these, lots of sites append a two letter suffix which corresponds to the country where the site originates from. For the Philippines, the country designation is .PH. As the internet has progressed, there have been additions to the naming conventions to include such suffixes as .info, .news and even .biz. However, it will take some time to see if these changes will be adopted globally by the entire internet community at large.

Q: What's the difference between a primary and a supplementary account?
A: A primary account refers to the main user who allows or permits any supplementary accounts or request. Only primary accounts receive monthly usage billings. Supplementary accounts are permitted accounts by the primary and can get changed, as per subscriber's wish.

Q: Can I catch computer viruses from the Internet?
A: You could get viruses if the files you downloaded contain viruses. In this day and age of increased threats to security, it is our opinion that any computer that connects to the internet have some form of anti-virus program as a means to minimize possible infection to your computer. Other common ways to catch a computer virus is through files embedded within e-mails (called attachments). As a general rule, never open any attachment without having some form of way to scan them first for unwanted virus which may be lurking inside.

Q: What is a DNS / Domain Name?
A: DNS stands for Domain Name System. It enables computers assigned in a network assigned with IP addresses (in numeric format) to translate them into names that people can better understand and memorize.

Q: Can I check my email on the other servers/providers?
A: Yes, just make sure that you are using your email address in I-manila for the POP account (email address) and that the incoming (POP) mail server is set to i-manila.com.ph. You can also use our web based e-mail site called I-MAIL (www.i-mail.com.ph).

Q: Sometimes when I send an email, I get an error message that the mail could not be delivered?
A: It might be that you mistyped the email address of the recipient or maybe that you have the wrong email address. It could also be that the system that receives the email is currently down, thus it won't accept your mail, and instead bounced back to your server.

Q: Can I use two different ISP's?
A: Yes you can. I-manila can co-exist with your other access accounts like your office or broadband connection without requiring special modification to get them both to work reliably.

Q: How do I request for Supplementary Account?
A: Account changes are best done through the My I-Manila Account page located on our homepage. Primary Users have the ability to add, remove, suspend Supplementary Users as much as they wish within the limits set by the service.

Q: What if I want to use my own domain name? Can I use it within i-manila?
A: As long as the domain is properly hosted on the internet, there should be no reason for it not to work.

Q: How do I pay my bills?
A: You could pay your bills at our Galleria Business Center:

- Internet Manila Galleria located at Level 3 of Robinson's Galleria

You can also pay through the ff. banks:

- Any UCPB branch
- Any Equitable-PCI branch

Q: How do I search for web sites?
A: You can use various search engines on the internet like yahoo.com and google.com, however the current best seems to be google.com. The latest internet browsers also support a built-in search which uses their own affiliated search engines.

Q: Which browser is better, Internet Explorer or Netscape?
A: They essentially work the same. Browser technology is pretty much well established by now and any new features are usually added on automatically through online updates.

Q: What is a proxy, and why do I have to set it?
A: Proxy allows you to access frequently accessed sites faster since they are in the cache. During the early days of limited bandwidth, proxies were pretty much needed to address bandwidth shortfalls. However, our current network structure no longer requires end users to actively set proxy servers as we have taken care of that for you.

Q: Why does the server go down?
A: The internet is also bound by Murphy's Law which states "If anything can go wrong, it will". However, what we can do is to ensure that our service suffers the least outages that occurs on our portion of the internet. This means the servers that hold your mail, or locally hosted website is assured of the least possible downtime.

Q: Can I give a telnet prompt at I- Manila?
A: No, I-manila doesn't give a telnet access to subscribers. However, if you do have telnet access to a server that allows you this kind of access then you can use telnet through our network.

Q: Why am I disconnected sometimes?
A: Disconnections can be caused either by the following, lifting an extention phone, problems with modems or even the occational hiccup from the phone company. I-manila does have a 6-hour limit per connection. This limits your liability in the remote possibility you left your computer online and did not disconnect for whatever reason.

Q: My mailbox is full?
A: The easiest way to free up your mailbox is to go through them using our web based e-mail facility (www.i-mail.com.ph), just delete the mails you don't need and purge your mailbox.

Q: I forgot my password, can you guys tell what it is?
A: No, passwords are encrypted and not even our staff can access nor decipher them. In case you forgot it kindly give us a call. Our staff will require some verification questions that need to be answered just in case, similar to what banks use to verify your identity over the phone. In order to make it easier, make sure you complete your contact information and it is up to date. You may do this on the My I-Manila Account page.

Q: I'm going abroad, how do I get my mail?
A: Just connect to the internet using any local provider/cybercafes and change the POP account to your email address and the POP/incoming mail server to i-manila.com.ph. The least intrusive way if you don't have your own PC is to use any internet browser and access your mail through I-Manila's web-base email (I-Mail) : http://www.i-mail.com.ph.

Q: Sometimes the web is fast and sometimes it is slow, why?
A: Bandwidth is constant for websites while the demand is varying. When there's more demand for a said website, traffic to this website will be slow.

Q: What is SPAM? How do I avoid getting them?
A: Spam is the common term used for messages that are unsolicited similar to junk mail. Unfortunately, SPAM has been with us since the early days of the internet. It's next to impossible to get rid of it 100%. However, there is a ways to minimize receiving them;

1. Never give out your i-manila address on any website that asks for your e-mail when registering. Always use a free e-mail address for this purpose (like Hotmail & Yahoo).

2. Never use your i-manila address when entering messages to mailing lists or groups.

3. Don't use easy to guess usernames like Bob, Frank or Harriet, it's best to use e-mail addresses that are harder to guess like sjones or tkrawlins.

4. Be wary when using freeware programs that specifically allow their creators to track your usage. These programs includes SPYware that in some cases copy your addressbook and send them to bulk e-mailers. You may do a search for programs to remove spyware on your PC.

5. When confronted with a spam that allows you to reply to be removed from their list, don't do it, it just means they are confirming their guess that your account exists.

6. Never transact business with these establishments that use SPAM.
